Build or block?
The future of Conservative housing policy
The housing crisis is one of Britain's most pressing problems. Now, Labour have put housebuilding at the heart of their agenda  – but they are also aiming to put as many of their new homes as possible in Conservatives constituencies, not least those with plentiful green belt. So how should the Tories respond? And how can they balance the interests of Nimbys and Yimbys?

17:00-18:00

What Went Wrong?
An election post-mortem
Labour’s landslide victory laid bare the profound dissatisfaction of the British public with the Tories’ track record in government. But what exactly were voters most upset about? This panel will dissect the recent electoral defeat, as well as the party's record in power, and ask what needs to be put at the top of the next leader's agenda.

How to save the NHS
Under the Conservatives, the NHS got ever more money – to ever less effect. So what does a new Tory vision for the NHS look like? How do you fix the challenges facing the health service – the impact of an ageing population, workforce recruitment and retention, the legacy of COVID – without bankrupting the country?

11:10-12:10

Taking back control
The future of UK migration policy
The public blame the Conservatives for failing to get both illegal and legal migration under control. And they're right. But Labour have no real policy in place to stop the boats, let alone pivot to the kind of high-skilled migration system voters thought they were getting. Our expert panel will ask what a better system might look like and how the Tories can make the case for it.

12:30-13:30

In Conversation with Rt Hon James Cleverly MP
CPS Director Robert Colvile sits down with James Cleverly to discuss his life and work, followed by an audience Q&A.

After the Landslide
Lessons from Conservative defeats
The recent election result was the worst in the Conservative Party’s history. But it wasn’t the first landslide loss. In the wake of the last such defeat, the CPS published the definitive analysis of how the party had responded to electoral setbacks across the 20th century, and what the key lessons were. Join our expert panel to discuss what the past can teach the party this time, as it plots a return to power.

15:10-16:10

Getting Britain growing
When people feel poorer, governments lose elections. If there was a single explanation for the election result, it's that the Conservatives failed to get Britain growing. So how do we fix that? This panel discussion will address the key barriers to growth in Britain – including taxation, regulation and productivity – and explore how we can get the growth we need.

16:30-17:30

What Have We Learned From 100 Days of Labour?
Have Labour hit the ground running, or simply hit the ground? Our expert panel will discuss how the first few months of the new Government have stacked up when it comes to Labour’s promises on housing, growth, tax, employment regulations, and more, and what challenges and opportunities it throws up for the Conservatives.

17:50-18:50

What would Maggie do?
Lessons from the Thatcher revolution
Fifty years ago, the Tories were in a deep hole. Kicked out of power, short on ideas, facing a country that seemed doomed to decline. This anniversary panel, featuring some of the authors of the new CPS essay collection 'Conservative Revolution', looks back at the seismic events of the Thatcher premiership, and asks what lessons we can draw from it today.

8:30 - 9:30

Can we fix Whitehall?
Did the Conservatives fail – or were they failed by Whitehall? Minister after minister complained during the Tories' 14 years in power that the government machine simply didn't work as they hoped. So how can the party do better next time? An expert panel discusses whether Whitehall is working as it should, and what needs to change if and when the party returns to power.

9:50 - 10:50

Have the Tories abandoned the family?
The Conservatives traditionally think of themselves as the party of the family. But the voters disagree. And no wonder, given sky-high housing costs, eye-watering childcare bills and a tax system that is less sympathetic to couples than almost any other developed country. So have the Tories abandoned the family? And how do we fix that?

11:10 - 12:10

Creating Europe's Silicon Valley
With the previous government expressing its ambition for the UK to become a ‘tech superpower’, can Labour pick up the baton and fulfil this objective? The panel, hosted in partnership with the CCIA, will delve into future prospects for UK tech, examining the potential impact of existing legislation on the sector and exploring measures to incentivise innovation and investment.

12:30 - 13:30

Open for business
How the UK can attract foreign investment
While the UK remains a hotspot for foreign investment, regulatory and tax changes risk weakening the Britain's appeal for overseas investors. This panel, hosted in partnership with the City of London Corporation, will explore ways to enhance the attractiveness of UK capital markets and ensure the UK maintains its status as a top destination for foreign investors.

13:50 - 14:50

The Great Energy Debate
In the wake of the election, should the Tories weaken their commitment to Net Zero, or double down? Are they the party of renewable energy or energy security – or is that a false distinction? As Labour goes pell mell for decarbonisation, join our expert panel to debate whether the Conservatives should follow suit.

15:10 - 16:10

In conversation with Rt Hon Tom Tugendhat MP
CPS Director Robert Colvile sits down with Tom Tugendhat to discuss his life and work, followed by an audience Q&A.

16:30 - 17:30

Boomers and bust?
Building a Conservatism for the young
Demographic trends are dragging the UK towards a future of lower growth and higher taxation. Meanwhile, a succession of Tory governments showered cash on pensioners while neglecting younger voters. So how can we build a Britain, and a conservatism, that works for young people? And if we don't what will the consequences be?
